Catching up with things

Article Archive

Since I didn't get the opportunity to get on here yesterday you will be getting a number things in this post, well I hope to get it all on here!

We have been having fun in our Prairie Women Sewing Circle gatherings. I have been running to keep up with the gatherings though and had a sucessful weekend getting both samples for the upcoming gathering next month done as well as the first block for the Generals' Wives block of the month! It is unbelievable for me to get all that done.

weekend finishes

The pink and blue little quilt and the pincushion are from the Prairie Woman Sewing Circle while the block is from the Generals' Wives BOM.  I am having such fun digging through my scraps and making do for each of the gatherings' projects. As you can see the little quilt this time is little, finishing at only 17" squares, the bom block is unfinished at 12 1/2". The pincushion is the second one I made and have yet to make it like the pattern. It is actually suppose to have cotton fabric applique on it. The first one just had to get done as it is part of the fun of each gathering. I was running out of time so it has no applique. Then when it was time to make this one since I was in the spirit of making do I found my leftover scraps of wool felt and did the applique with what I could find as well as the leftover floss I could find. I think I'm getting into the spirit of this club! It is fun to see just what you can make with what you have on hand.

I am so thankful that I finally have in the patterns and fabric I need to finally start the Generals' Wives block of the month. The first month's block was a breeze to stitch up.

I'm also thankful that there is enough fabric allowed for the making of each block. There are even some leftovers... do I hear use for make do projects in the future?! Some of you have already come in to collect your first block. There are still some spots open to join in on the fun, but we do have a limited number of kits so it is who ever gets signed up before the limit is hit. This quilt, at least for me is huge,  100 x 100 and can be made even bigger if you elect to add on 12" borders on each side.

This is the 100" x 100" size.

It is funny making a 12" inch finished block again. Boy cutting out the center piece of fabric just seemed gigantic. Usually the blocks I make are that size after being pieced, or they could actually be smaller even! I thought I was going to make block 2 last night, but all great plans fall by the wayside every once in awhile. I was extremely tired last night, but decided to go ahead and work on the next block.  I didn't even get it all cut out before I had to give up. I guess that was a good thing as this morning when I went back in the sewing room to finish up the cutting and lay out the block I found I either didn't cut all I needed or I have miss laid two pieces. Either of those two things could be possible. I guess I'll be doing  more cutting tonight! I'd love to get it pieced. It is just having to see it come together that is so exciting.

A few on you on Facebook have asked for more details on our pet bed charity  project we have  going on. I have tried to keep it as easy as I can. I am cutting fabric either 1/2yard cut or a yard cut.  Here are the Shoppe we are then pressing approx. 1/2" under on one short edge side.

Then sew up the open sides, it is different for the different size cuts of yardage.

Then all is left is turning it right side out to stuff and topstitching the folded under edge to close the  bed.

So far we have delivered 67 of the beds to the shelter. The lady there is extremely grateful for the beds. Tomorrow we will be working on making more.  People have been generous with their scrap donations, dropping them off all the time. Some actually drop off completed bed.   We will be making cases tomorrow so we can stuff more of the beds. Each time we have a bed making day we have had volunteers to help with the making of the cases or stuffing them. We too are thankful for all the help you all have given us. I look forward to seeing  who ever  can make it out to help tomorrow.

I think that it is about all for today. Hope you all have a wonderful day quilting!
